(01) Project Definition
The Institute for Advanced Studies at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń supports interdisciplinary research, collaboration and academic development across four priority areas. We designed the Institute’s new website – from information architecture and user journeys to desktop and mobile interfaces. Its structure was intended to connect research, people, programmes and events within a single system of relationships, while preserving IAS’s distinct character within the NCU ecosystem.
(02) Tactical Analysis
We designed the architecture so that content could be accessed through a research area, project, team, name, programme or job opening. Navigation was built around five areas: Institute, People, Research, Programmes and Opportunities, and News and Events. Search results are divided into these areas, allowing each type of information to retain its own context.
(03) Strategy
We based the website structure on the Institute’s current activity. The homepage brings together current events, priority research areas, selected projects and job openings. From the first screen, it leads users to what IAS is currently working on, who forms its academic community and how they can take part in its activities.
(04) Solution
The visual layer draws on the character of academic publishing. Large serif typography and the IAS initials give the website a distinctive rhythm, while simpler interface typography handles navigation, metadata and practical information. Modular cards present projects, teams, news, events and opportunities, while mint green highlights the key areas of interaction. We carried the same hierarchy through to the mobile layouts.
